I confess to being confused as to why the Profiles site changed to this.

I don't know the full details, but more than just Profiles is being pulled to this site.
 
There are a few changes like being able to make your own room. I know you had that, but most users didn't.
 
The other site had become a bit stagnant, so the decision was made for a new one.
 
And, what about all the 'Friends' we had a Profiles? How do we find them/know when they are online on this new site? What does 'Follow' mean on this site?
 
As of probably this morning, I don't know, I was asleep, the chat friend list is re-implemented and functional. You can add friends by following on the forum or clicking a name and using "add friend" in chat.

On the forums, there is a "people you follow" section in the "Members Online Now" box. In chat, if your screen is wide enough, a friends list will show next to the user list. You can cycle between different friend list and user list display modes with the bottom right button, a silhouette with arrows next to it.
